Hey, Warbler Guy, where can I see a Connecticut Warbler this autumn?

Thanks, Hank (in New York state):

Here's one, below, that was seen on Friday, 9/7/12.....So, Hank, I'll spring for your gas and you scoot east (young man)....Maybe you'll see the one below that Brian Toal observed....If you see it, Hank, please let me know so I can immediately turn green (with envy).

In other words, I rarely see or hear a COWA (Connecticut Warbler).

Are other readers like me in striking out often with this nemesis bird?

9/8 - Brian Toal just called to report a Connecticut Warbler on the powerline cut on Rt 44 in West Hartford, going up Avon mountain. The bird was found between the first and second poles on the left side of the trail.

I don't know where you can find a CT Warbler in the fall. In Minnesota where I live, they are much, much easier to find in the *spring.* This is partly because CT Warblers often *sing* during spring migration (they never sing in the fall), and their song is very loud and also very distinctive. The only song that sounds similar is the song of the N. Waterthrush, but it's not that hard to distinguish from the CT Warbler song. In any case, the loud song of the CT Warbler is a very easy way of finding one during the spring (if you can find one singing, that is). Have patience, and look (and listen) for one then.

In the fall, also keep in mind that most CT Warblers show *brown* hoods, not gray hoods. This makes them look kind of similar to dull C. Yellowthroats. It's all part of the joy of looking for fall warblers.

Minnesota commenter from 9/15: Smart and excellent thoughts....Wish I grew up in MN instead of S. WI (says Warbler Guy), cuz' I seldom saw them and rarely see OR hear them in spring when birding in s. WI. It's a rare bird and, indeed, a Nemesis Bird for many birders.

Mn Warbler Birder sayeth: One of the nice things of being in Minnesota, or even up in the Red River Valley in North Dakota (where overall, warbler watching isn't so great). Must be the latitude, as Connecticut Warblers sing a lot in the spring, if they are around. The song is a dead giveaway. *Not* a nemesis bird for experienced warbler watchers in these parts.

But birding in S. Wisconsin can't be so bad either. Worm-eating, Kentucky, Y-B Chats must be much easier there. Those three birds are super tough in Minnesota. In 20+ years of warblering, I have found two KY's, one Worm-eating, and not a single chat. The others I've seen (heard) have been stake-outs. And now WI birders have Kirtland's to look for. What I'd give (sell, trade) to get one of those in Minnesota....

Wish the warblers would hang around that's it's 10/1, most of them seem to be gone on my forays.

Or you could be lucky and see one at the Mendoza Ranch B in Pt. Reyes National Seashore, Marin Co., CA (on 10/1/12, when one was still present)....though I did NOT see it on a tour with a client from England that I took here on 10/3/12 (I merely saw Palm Warbler on 10/3/12 here.)
